I have chosen to draw a manta ray as their charisma and elegance captures the imagination of any who witness their ethereal beauty. Despite the worldwide media fascination, both species of manta ray are threatened with extinction (giant mantas are endangered, while reef mantas are vulnerable) and are decreasing globally due to human impacts. The public needs to become more aware of the dangers this species is facing, rather than simply entranced by their grace.
I am a marine biology master's student at the University of Western Australia, studying sharks and rays. I have spent my life exploring the marine environment through snorkelling and scuba diving, which developed my passion for protecting marine species and encouraging people to care about their conservation through art.
